Another young artist is the protagonist of the new solo show at the Galleria Massimodeluca, the third exhibition of the season: Barbara Prenka (Gjakova, Kosovo, 1990) will be presenting I muri sono i custodi delle finestre in the Via Torino venue, a show curated by Marina Bastianello (from 19 May to 16 June 2017, opening Thursday 18 May from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.) and with a catalogue essay by Antonio D’Amico.

Prenka has worked together with Massimodeluca since 2015 when she was chosen to take part in the first Darsena Residency; she still lives and works in Venice. And it was here, where the artist creates her works in her Venetian studio, that the idea for the show was born, a show that mixes thoughts about the concepts of personal limits and social boundaries, and the strategies for overcoming them.

Bastianello, the artistic director of the Massimodeluca gallery, has said that he decided to personally curate this project on “one sunny afternoon when I went to visit Barbara Prenka in her studio: a corner of Venice where you breath the scent of paints and canvases; a tiny room where two small windows seem to become even smaller, enclosed by the surrounding walls and revealing other walls: those of the house in front where washing is hung out to dry. To this visual hint, one that is the background to Barbara’s creative moments, together we added our thoughts and sensations, and from this came the idea for the show’s title”.

So I muri sono i custodi delle finestre is a metaphor referring to the strategy that the artist has elaborated in order to evade the limits and boundaries imposed by society or by personal experience. In this context, the windows are, yes, openings that allow a glimpse of visions that can offer a freedom beyond ideological obstacles; but at the same time they underline an idea of the boundaries on which Prenka’s art research is concentrated.

The essence of the works on show – painted fabrics that fold over onto themselves, pieces of embroidered paper where the action of the needle weakens and fragments the paper but, at the same time, generates a unitary network – is to represent the attempt to break through these limits with actions that show their beginnings as well as their end.
